人々が母語以外の言語を使用し、維持する能力をどのように身につけるのかについて興味を持っています。会話分析、成員カテゴリー化分析、文脈分析、その他の質的エスノグラフィーの方法論を総合して駆使するマイクロエスノグラフィックな手法で、人々がどのように他の言語を習得するかを調べており、現在はポリグロット（4つ以上の言語を習得した人）がどのように言語を習得し維持しているかについて研究を行っています。また、ディスコースにおける人間の友好関係の構築と管理に関するマイクロエスノグラフィー的研究も進めています。
